Projects
GUWAHATI, July 10: A resource book on development chronicling the best practices, methodologies and success stories of Bosco Reach Out, a pioneer NGO of the Don Bosco Society in India, was released here today by Fr. VM Thomas, SDB, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Guwahati. The book, Bosco Reach Out: A Salesian Development Initiative in Northeast India, is edited by Fr. Johnson Parackal SDB, Executive Director, BRO.
Salesians of Don Bosco have been pioneers of sorts in the field of development in North East India. Ever since their arrival in the region in 1922, they have been involved in the uplift of the people through a variety of interventions. In 1983, the Salesians, in an effort to better systematize their developmental efforts, formally launched a development wing under the name, ‘Bosco Reach Out’.
Strategically located in the heart of Guwahati city, the gate way to Northeast India, Bosco Reach Out has played a stellar role in the empowerment of rural people and development of backward regions through Self Help Group formation and training. The contribution of Bosco Reach Out towards social uplift and community development through SHGs has been significant. Today BRO reaches out to more than forty thousand people through its Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Speaking on the occasion of the Book release, Fr. Thomas referred to the new work as ”an important contribution to the society” which, he felt certain, would help individuals and institutions to become familiar with ”some of the best known theories and practices of the day in the field of social work.” He congratulated the author and his team for bringing out ”a truly remarkable work” and hoped BRO would continue to take forward the legacy of ‘service for empowerment’ to the poorest of the poor.
Receiving the first copy of the new publication from the Provincial, Fr. George Palamattam, SDB, the first director of BRO contented that it was a moment of great pride and satisfaction. He termed the growth of Bosco Reach Out, from a tiny little institution which carried out relief works at the time of floods and other natural calamities to one that tremendously impacts society today, as truly ‘phenomenal and one everyone involved can be proud about’.
Earlier, welcoming all to the book release ceremony and introducing his new publication, the author, Fr. Johnson Parackal said besides documenting for posterity the work of a development stakeholder of some importance in the region, there was another equally compelling reason behind the work: to celebrate BRO’s three decades of nation-building and empowering engagement with rural folks to enable them live more dignified lives.
